Sin and Salvation in Baptist Town

Mobile dispatches from a project by photographer Matt Eich

5 Questions

apadblog:

Photographer Matt Eich has amassed quite a collection of images in Baptist Town (aka Greenwood, Mississippi). And is continuing to fund the project with the help of a grant from Getty Images (which did a nice interview with Matt on the project here).

Matt’s gotten a ton of press…

The always amazing Melissa Lyttle had me do an interview with Roger Williams (a.k.a. Baptist Town Winky) from my ongoing project, “Sin & Salvation in Baptist Town" for the APAD 5 Questions blog. I’m pumped to share it with y’all.

Impossible Project images made by students from Delta Streets Academy, a high school for at-risk young men in Greenwood, Mississippi.

During my last trip in early February I gave away nearly $200 worth of Impossible Project film to four students in 9th grade. Two of them brought back pictures. This is the start of something that I hope to expand and deepen over the remainder of my four-year project in Greenwood. Teaching visual literacy and visual communication to young men who would otherwise not be exposed to photography will allow this project to continue long after I am gone. It also begins to counteract the issue of this town always being portrayed by an outsider, despite the amount of time I have invested in this place. It is so refreshing to see the place through their eyes.

My hope is that The Impossible Project will come on board to help provide film for these young men to use, as I certainly can’t afford to keep giving it away. Looking forward to my next trip in late March, early April as I plan to continue this collaboration with the students.

I just wrapped up a week of manning The New Yorker’s Instagram feed (@NewYorkerMag) while catching up with folks in Greenwood, Mississippi. Here are a few of the images I shared with their audience. It’s been great being back in town for this short trip.
